Castle Hill Inn, OceanCliff, Glen Manor, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard — coastal New England venues we film regularly, and what each one gives a wedding film.

Boston couples often assume a coastal wedding means Cape Cod. It is worth looking south and offshore too. Newport is roughly ninety minutes from the city and offers a kind of grandeur the Cape does not, and the islands offer something else again.

These are the coastal venues outside the Cape we film most often.

Castle Hill Inn, Newport

A headland on Narragansett Bay with water on three sides. Very few venues in New England give you that much open horizon, and on film it reads as scale — wide shots that do not need anything else in them to be interesting.

The lawn ceremony site faces the water, which means late afternoon light comes from behind your guests and lands on your faces. That is the arrangement every videographer hopes for and rarely gets.

OceanCliff, Newport

A mansion on the cliffs with a west-facing outlook, so sunset happens over the water and directly into frame. Dramatic on camera. The interiors are traditional and warm, which gives an evening reception a completely different character to the daytime footage — a useful contrast when we cut the film together.

Glen Manor House, Portsmouth

Quieter than the Newport mansions and, to our eye, one of the most consistently beautiful properties in Rhode Island. Formal gardens, stone terraces and mature trees mean there is texture in every direction, and gardens give you shade — which matters enormously for a midday summer ceremony.

Blithewold Mansion, Bristol

An arboretum and mansion on Narragansett Bay. The grounds are the draw: specimen trees, a great lawn, water beyond. It suits couples who want the wedding to feel like it is happening in a landscape rather than at a venue.

Nantucket Golf Club, Siasconset

Nantucket is a commitment — ferries, accommodation, guest logistics — and the weddings we have filmed there have been worth it. The light on the island is genuinely different, and the understated architecture keeps attention on the people.

Plan the logistics properly. Ferry schedules dictate everything, and vendors who miss a boat cannot simply drive over. We travel the day before as standard for island weddings.

Martha’s Vineyard

Farm Neck, the Old Whaling Church, and a great many private estates. The Vineyard offers more variety of look than Nantucket — you can have a barn wedding, a clapboard-church wedding or a beach wedding within a few miles of each other.

Is it worth leaving Boston?

It depends what you want the film to feel like. A city wedding gives you architecture, recognisable landmarks and a certain pace. A coastal wedding gives you space, sky and weather, and a slower film that leans on landscape.

The practical trade-off is guest logistics. Anything past about ninety minutes from Boston means most guests stay over, which turns a wedding into a weekend. Many couples want exactly that. Some do not, and there is no wrong answer — but decide deliberately rather than discovering it at the RSVP stage.

Under an hour from Boston: the North Shore and the near South Shore. Guests drive home.
Ninety minutes: Newport and the mid-Cape. Most guests stay a night.
Ferry required: Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Plan a full weekend.
