Boston Wedding Sunset Times and Golden Hour by Month (2027)

If we could give every couple one number before they build their wedding timeline, it would be the time the sun sets on their wedding day. Most timelines are built forwards: ceremony at four because four sounds right, cocktails at half past, dinner at six. Then in October someone realises the portraits are scheduled for after dark.

Build it backwards instead. Start from sunset, decide where you want to be when the light is at its best, and let the ceremony time fall out of that. To make that easy, we have worked out the figures for every month of 2027.

How to read the table

• Golden hour begins when the sun drops below six degrees above the horizon. Light turns warm, soft and directional. In Boston it lasts between 37 and 45 minutes before sunset depending on the time of year — shortest around the equinoxes, longest at midsummer and midwinter.
• Last light is the end of civil twilight, when the sky has gone from blue to dark. The half hour between sunset and last light is blue hour, and on the water it is often the most beautiful footage of the day.
• Latest ceremony start assumes a thirty-minute ceremony, about forty minutes for family photos, the receiving line and moving to cocktails, and leaves you free to step out for portraits in the half hour before sunset. It is rounded down to the half hour. A longer ceremony, or a church across town from your reception, means starting earlier.

The sun sets on Cape Cod up to six minutes earlier than in downtown Boston, which is the column on the right. Newport and the Rhode Island coast land within a few minutes of Boston all year.

The months that catch couples out

September and October move fast

Across September 2027 Boston’s sunset moves from 7:20 pm on the 1st to 6:29 pm on the 30th — fifty-one minutes in a month. October loses another forty-six. That is why a timeline borrowed from a friend’s August wedding rarely works in the autumn: the light you are counting on has left almost an hour earlier.

Early autumn is also some of the best light of the year in New England, low and warm and long. It is worth planning for properly.

The week the clocks change

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 7, 2027. On Saturday November 6, sunset in Boston is at 5:33 pm. One week later, on the 13th, it is at 4:26 pm. If you are choosing between those two Saturdays, the first gives you over an hour more evening light — a genuine consideration for anyone planning outdoor portraits or a ceremony with a view.

June is steadier than you think

Midsummer is forgiving. Boston’s latest sunset of 2027 is 8:27 pm on June 27, and across the whole of June the time shifts by only eleven minutes. The catch is the opposite problem: sunset lands in the middle of your reception, often during dinner. Plan a short break to step outside rather than waiting for a gap that never comes.

Winter weddings

The earliest sunset of the year is 4:13 pm on December 9. A winter wedding does not need daylight to be beautiful — some of our favourite films are candlelit — but if outdoor portraits matter to you, a first look before the ceremony is the reliable way to get them.

Why golden hour matters more on film

A photographer needs the light to be right for a fraction of a second. We need it to be right for minutes at a time, across the walk, the laugh, the turn back towards the camera. That is why the timing carries more weight for a film than for a gallery, and why we would rather have twenty relaxed minutes at the right time than an hour at the wrong one.

On the coast it matters even more. Open water reflects the sky, so golden hour and blue hour are more dramatic and go more quickly — we wrote about that in our guide to Cape Cod weddings. And some waterfront venues do not face the sunset at all: at the Boston Harbor Hotel the harbour faces east, so the magic there is blue hour over the water rather than the sun going down.

Three ways to build your day around the light

• Do a first look. Seeing each other before the ceremony lets you take your portraits in good light whenever it falls, and is close to essential from October through March.
• Schedule a sunset break. Fifteen or twenty minutes, set by the clock rather than by feel. In summer this usually happens between courses; tell your planner and your venue so dinner service works around it.
• Match an outdoor ceremony to the sun. If you are marrying outside, starting about an hour before sunset gives soft light without harsh shadows. Check which direction you will be facing, too — nobody enjoys squinting into the sun through their vows.

Overcast days do not cancel any of this. Cloud softens golden hour rather than removing it, and the sky still darkens on the same schedule, so the times above hold whatever the forecast.
